Narrogin Spring Festival Outstanding Success

Hundreds of people attended last weekends The Narrogin Spring Festival, enjoying a fabulous array of acts, demonstrations and displays. Consistent with its philosophy bringing free family orientated cultural entertainment to our community, the Narrogin Spring Festival provided activities for all ages to enjoy. Local groups, agencies and volunteer organisations were able to showcase their skill, as well as fundraising for their groups.

Entertainment for children is a key part of the Spring Festival, with shows from Sci Tech, Story Tellers, Craft Activities in the Dragon Grotto, Adam the Magician, Punch and Judy and Face Painting.

Demonstrations by the Belly Dancers and Boot Scooters were a highlight, and David Harrison’s music greatly added to the festivities in the park. Another spectacle was the aerial acrobat. Arty Ms who thrilled the audience with daring feats on the high trapeze plus Fairy Claire the Stilt Walker and The Peppermint Pixie.

The Narrogin Community Street Parade was a wonderful display of local community groups, with 29 floats in the parade. The street was lined with scores of people enjoying the spectacle. $600 in prize money was shared between Narrogin Scouts, the Belly Dancers, East Narrogin Primary and Narrogin Primary. All groups received awards of participation.

The Interactive Art Exhibition was a new concept and a great success. 11 artists were involved, whilst local talent performed hourly on the Town Hall stage. High School Music students busked along the streets amongst the street stalls and skateboarders gave skilful performances. 90 people attended The Wine and Cheese Amongst the Art Sundowner and were treated to an evening of music, art, fine wine and cocktail nibbles.

The fine weather was perfect for viewing the seven Open Gardens, with busloads of people admiring the splendour of local creativity.

The Spring Festival costs, which are in excess of $20,000, are met through sponsorship from Health Way and Lottery West ($10,600), the weekend monies and previous fundraisers. Any profits from these festivals get returned to our community; the wrought iron benches you see around the CBD are an example.

There are so many people to thank for their wonderful contributions to the weekend said Linda White, President. In particular, my hard working committee with special mention of the outstanding efforts by Helen Hall, Vicki Gawel and Jane Darvall. The success of this festival is a testimony to the capacity of local people and the volunteer spirit. Whether you played a minor or a major role in organisation or running of this event, you have my heartfelt thanks.

Planning for the 2009 Spring Festival beings next month. The festival is evolving and our aim is to showcase our town and provide cultural activities for all to enjoy. We presently only have a small committee and we would welcome new members who are keen to expand this cultural event. I can be contacted on 98813390, said Linda White.
